Shore House seeks Executive Director

Program: Shore House
Location: Red Bank, New Jersey


Shore Clubhouse is a membership organization dedicated to providing resources and supportive services for people with mental illness to have a fulfilling life, including: access to employment, education, housing, health care and the opportunity to be productive, contributing members of their community.

Job Summary:

  • The Executive Director (ED) is accountable to the Board of Directors of Shore Clubhouse.  The ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility of the staff, programs, and execution of the organization’s mission. S/he will possess knowledge of the mental health field and embrace the Clubhouse model’s core programs and operations.  

  • This is a full time salaried position and estimated workload requirement is 40 hours per week but may vary as necessary.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or Business with knowledge of nonprofit organizations; master’s degree preferred. Minimum of two years experience providing services in the Clubhouse Model program preferred.  Will consider work experience in other nonprofit organizations that embrace the values of empowerment, consensus building, and social inclusion for the people that they serve.
  •  Ability to work long and varied hours.
  • Willingness to participate in the standard Clubhouse Training at an ICCD Training Base.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills; accessible personal style and orientation toward service.
  • A demonstrable understanding of the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs. A commitment to the values and beliefs of a Clubhouse program for people living with mental illness.

Job Requirements:

Leadership and Planning-

  • Obtain ICCD certification through an understanding and implementation of the ICCD standards. 
  • Actively engage and energize volunteers, committees, participants, and partnering organizations to fulfill organizational mission and goals.
  • In reporting the Board of Directors, provide support and serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for local, state, and national operations.
  • Ensure effective systems to track organizational goals and objectives, and regularly evaluate program components to be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.
  • Complete board and other reports as assigned.
  • Complete the strategic business planning process with the Board of Directors to ensure healthy organizational growth and expansion of new programs.
  • Begin to build partnerships and establish relationships with funders, political and community leaders, and the local advocacy groups to ensure community support for organizational growth.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the budget.
  • Attend New Jersey State mental health planning activities to bring back information that can be utilized to develop additional funding sources.
  • Attend Clubhouse trainings provided at ICCD training centers and at regional and international conferences.


  • Provide leadership and structure to develop Clubhouse programming.
  • Identify and cultivate members to assist with program development.
  • Be active in work units and model Clubhouse skills and philosophy.
  • Establish relationships with members and staff consistent with Clubhouse   philosophy.
  • Encourage Shore Clubhouse members in their recovery journey.
  • Participate in the development of jobs for members.
  • Ask for member feedback about the relevancy of programs and levels of service.
  • Provide clean, safe, and professional environment in which to work and socialize on a daily basis.
  • Identify and provide outreach to new members; provide up-to-date information on program opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other programs to stretch community resources to meet the needs of people with mental illness.
  • Develop a strong network of colleagues (both locally and on the state level) in the mental health field and Clubhouse model network, in order to bring together new opportunities for the organization.

Fundraising & Communications-

  • Assist the Board of Directors in expanding revenues to generate and fund activities for support programs
    and operations.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to seek opportunities to develop and/or expand programs to meet the
    emerging needs of families and people with mental illnesses.
  • Develop and refine all aspects of organization’s communications, from web presence to public relations,
    with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

Essential Skills-

  • Operate in emergency situations and effectively manage people in difficult situations.
  • Establish, monitor and oversee all program goals for services and maintain data related to program goals.
  • Anticipate the need for materials and manpower to accomplish work.
  • Engage in proactive thinking surrounding issues related to program development.
  • Interact with a diverse group of people. (i.e. people with mental illness, staff, board members, state and local policy makers, advocates, and family members).
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Assess the quality of other people’s work, encourage the efforts of others, and enforce organizational policies and standards.
  • Possess knowledge of and experience with individuals dealing with alcohol and other drug problems.
  • Exhibit self-motivation and work with limited supervision.
