Hello clubhouse world!
First, an update on Dee (Filipowicz), who many of you know has been
the administrative assistant for the ICCD since our inception. Dee is
recovering steadily from her recent surgery, and seems to be feeling
stronger every day. We expect her back sometime in the middle of
January.
We have also recently hired an additional administrative support
staff worker, Kathy Brankof, who will begin with us on Wednesday
December 15. The additional help will greatly assist us in responding
more quickly and thoroughly to the needs of the clubhouse community. We
look forward to Kathy's arrival....
*******************************************************
Cathaleene Macias' article, co-authored with Courtenay Harding,
Meredith Alden, Dennis Geertsen and Paul Barreira, has recently been
published in "Administration and Policy in Mental Health"
vol.26, No. 5, 1999. The article is entitled "The Value of Program
Certification for Performance Contracting," and addresses the
statistical fact that certified clubhouses do better in almost every
dimension of clsubhouse outcomes than do their non-certified
counterparts. The last sentence of the paper's Abstract reads:
"These findings provide support for the practical utility of
adopting program certification as a performance indicator in an era of
managed care, as well as the specific value of relying on ICCD
Certification as a quality assurance indicator."
*******************************************************
The Standards Review Committee met on Tuesday via
teleconference. The committee continues to review and make
recommendations about the proposals which have been proposed.
*******************************************************
We are doing a final review of the room and registration billing from
the Seminar. If your clubhouse has not yet paid in full, we will be
Contacting you within the next two weeks.
*******************************************************
If your clubhouse has feedback or suggestions which will be
helpful as we begin to plan the NEXT international seminar, we would
love to have it.
Please send feedback and ideas to us at the ICCD.
*******************************************************
December certification visits are: Quabbin House, MA; Chinook
Clubhouse, CO; Starpoint, MA; Club United, NY; Metro Club, NY.
*******************************************************
The Training Base Group meeting has been rescheduled for March 3-5.
The next Faculty Training session will be held in New York, March 21-25.
*******************************************************
The ICCD will be sending out its first Annual Appeal letter next
week. If you know people who you think would want to be added to our
mailing list, please send us their names and addresses.
Have a great clubhouse week!

November 17, 1999
Hello everyone.
It's been one month since 10 IS, and things have gotten back to
"normal" at
the ICCD.
This week, Joel and Ralph will participate in a teleconference with the
three existing clubhouses and several clubhouse 'working groups' in
Ohio.
The plan is to begin to develop a strategy for clubhouse development
throughout the state.
*************************************************************************
The Standards Review Committee met to review the input about the
Standard
proposals received at the Seminar. There were two meetings for 10 IS
participants to voice their views about the proposed changes, as well as
a
lengthy discussion about the proposals at the Faculty meeting after the
Seminar. The next step in the process will be for the Committee to meet
again next week to make final revisions to the language of the proposals
before they are sent out one more time to ICCD clubhouses for review.
*************************************************************************
Certification visits in November are taking place at the following
clubhouses:
Grand Avenue Club, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Terence House, Queens Village, NY
Achievement House, Oklahoma City, OK
Chelton Loft, NYC, NY
Liberty Place, Pittsburgh, PA
Green Door, Washington DC
*************************************************************************
The ICCD Coalitions Group has been active on pushing for final passage
of
the Work Incentives Act in the United States. We will keep you
informed....
*************************************************************************
WE NEED PICTURES! If you were at the Seminar and took good pictures, we
need some! We are looking for several shots that will capture the feel
of
the Seminar, both for the ICCD newsletter and for several upcoming
editions
of the Clubhouse Community Journal. Pictures need to be clear and
focused.
We could use large group shots from plenaries, and also some shots from
workshops. If you have any - please send them to Robby Vorspan at the
ICCD
as soon as possible. We appreciate it!
*************************************************************************
Also, if you either MADE or HEARD a speech at the Seminar that was
particularly worthwhile, could you please send it to us (or call the
person
who made it and ask him/her to send it to us)? We need both the hard
copy
and if possible, a computer disk. Papers will be considered for
publication
in a variety of upcoming ICCD publications. (send attention: Robby
Vorspan)
*************************************************************************
We welcome Jeff Aron of Greenwich Village in New York City as a new
member
of the ICCD Board of Directors. Jeff was formerly the Director of
Development for Fountain House, and has a long standing interest in and
involvement with the ICCD.
*************************************************************************
Have a great week.

Hello clubhouses,
Once again -- if you are still planning to register for 10 I S in
Toronto
-- do in NOW! We are very close to our limit, and registration will be
closed on September 1 or when we reach 800 registrants (whichever comes
first -- and they are both coming quickly)
****************************************************
In the next several weeks, you will be receiving phone calls from
members
and staff at the ICCD to discuss participating in the various workshops
at
10 I S.
****************************************************
We are in the process of mailing out two fascinating reports based on
the
1999 Clubhouse Survey. All clubhouses should receive them shortly.
****************************************************
On Thursday August 12, the Development Committee of the ICCD Board of
Directors met in Washington D.C. The Committee organized a development
strategy for this fiscal year which will include: a Eurasian initiative;
a
U.S. initiative; and a direct mail campaign.
****************************************************
The ICCD is collecting clubhouse slides to be used in a large slide
presentation at 10 I S. We will also be using them for upcoming ICCD
presentations and publications. If you would like your clubhouse to be
represented, please send us 3 - 5 of your best slides depicting
clubhouse
life (with one showing your actual clubhouse), along with a signed form
which gives us permission to use the pictures in ICCD presentations and
publications. We need the slides by September 15 in order to prepare the
presentation for the Seminar. We will not be able to return the slides
--
so if you want to keep one please make a double. Thank you for your help
with this big project.
****************************************************
On Sunday, members and staff from the ICCD gathered to celebrate the 5th
Birthday of the ICCD.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

Hi clubhouse world--
The Seminar in Toronto is getting closer and closer, and registrations
are
pouring in. As of now, we have 740 registrants! We will have to close

Seminar THIS IS THE TIME TO DO IT.
********************************************************
Joel Corcoran is in Washington D.C. today, meeting with the Development
Committee of the ICCD Board.
********************************************************
Ralph Bilby has just returned from a five week whirlwind clubhouse tour
of
the Pacific Rim. He visited twelve clubhouses in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong
and Australia. Ralph and Fountain House's David Sell conducted a
certification visit at Taiwha Fountain House in Korea (which is an ICCD
training base), and Ralph and Lesley Miles of Bromham Place (Australia)
did
a certification review at Stepping Stone Clubhouse in Brisbane,
Australia.
Ralph was also able to provide technical assistance with employment, as
well as introductions to multinational employers, to many of the
clubhouses
he visited.
********************************************************
The ICCD Clubhouse Advisory Committee met in New York City last weekend
for
a very productive one and a half day meeting.
********************************************************
Sophie Eckfeldt, the first ICCD intern, returned to Sweden last Monday
after spending six weeks working with us. We thank Sophie for all of her
hard work, and for being such a delightful addition to the ICCD team in
New
York. The internship program is off to a very positive start!
********************************************************
Two certification visits have been scheduled for August. These are:
Stepping Stone Clubhouse (Brisbane, Australia) and Hui Hana Pono (Wai'anae,
Hawaii).
********************************************************
Everyone should have received the recent mailing including all of the
new
proposals for changes in the Standards. The deadline for sending in

Hello clubhouses!
Last week, we had the honor of hosting a visit from Nobel peace prize
recipient and acclaimed author Elie Wiesel. He visited Fountain House
and
the ICCD last Wednesday, touring the buildings, speaking with members
and
staff, and wrapping up with a small meeting. It was clear from his words
and demeanor during the visit that he was deeply moved by his experience
of clubhouse. With a sense of obvious empathy and understanding, he
spoke
of the isolation and loneliness of people with mental illness and
expressed
his appreciation for the work of the clubhouse movement in addressing
this
painful reality. He was especially interested in the hope that
clubhouses
are bringing to people with mental illness all around the world. We are
looking forward to a continued relationship with this extraordinary man.
*************************************************************************
Joel recently returned from a week in Salt Lake City where he
facilitated
our 8th Faculty Training session. The training was apparently extremely
exciting and enriching for all present, and we pleased to welcome
several
wonderful new Faculty members to the work of consulting with and
certifying clubhouses.
The trainers in this group were: Joel Corcoran (ICCD), Kevin Winn
(Brigham City House), Jon Paulding (Alliance House) , Diann Connick
(The Clubhouse),Alan Guitar (Chinook Clubhouse), and Margaret Currin
(Alliance House). The "trainees" were: Warren Sparrow
(Carriage House), Mark Nervig (Evergreen
Club), Jack Yatsko (Friendship House), Rita Wigham (Evergreen Club),
Andre Gauthier (Causeway), India Ely (Fountain House), Mary Kay Uhing
(Liberty
Centre), and Cathi Greer (Breakthrough Club).
Thank you to Alliance House for hosting the training, and to Wasatch
House,New Reflection House, and Brigham City House for opening your
clubhouses to
the trainees.

Hello Clubhouse World. . .
Recently, Fountain House's Director of Research, Cathaleene Macias,
along with two other well-known and highly regarded researchers, made a
presentation about the ICCD and the clubhouse movement to NASHBIT

Special Note:
I'd like to make an addition to one of the ICCD highlights posted today.
The NASMHPD (National Association of State Mental Health Program
Directors)
Research Institute sponsored the conference. The presentation
mentioned in
the recent ICCD posting addressed the role of program certification
in
general in state performance contracting. ICCD certification was
recommended as a prototype for state performance contracts.
