The 17th Clubhouse International Seminar was held on October 19-24, 2013 at the elegant Hilton at the Ballpark in St. Louis, Missouri. Independence Center, a Clubhouse International Training Base, was our local host Clubhouse.
This year’s seminar welcomed over 600 attendees from around the world, including representatives from 128 member Clubhouses from 20 different countries; Clubhouse International staff and board members; and mental health policy makers, service providers and advocates.
The Seminar offered an exciting and inspiring array of learning opportunities about creating and sustaining strong, effective Clubhouse communities. It was a wonderful forum for exchange of information and ideas among new and veteran Clubhouses, and others who are interested in our work.
The theme, “A Place to Belong,” was echoed in 8 plenary sessions, 75 interactive workshops and exciting social events. Individual member testimonials about life with mental illness and the powerful effects of belonging to a recovery-focused Clubhouse community were the most compelling aspects of the Seminar.
17IS was a stimulating and inspiring learning experience: it afforded participants both the time and space to network and learn more about the Clubhouse model, best practices, and about innovative strategies in the rapidly evolving field of mental health.
We sincerely thank the members, staff and Board of Directors of Independence Center for their hard work, leadership and gracious hospitality as they managed logistics, hosted hundreds of tours of their pacesetting Clubhouse throughout the Seminar.
